Quack quack quack…

My first attempt at making duck, and it is delicious.  I think I overcooked it a little, based on my observations of the beautiful color that is everyone else’s duck online.  Mine looks like chicken on the inside.

It’s so juicy and delicious, though.  I decided to (for extra yum) drown it in honey and maple syrup… well, not really.  I just used about a few tablespoons of each.  Still, it is amazing!!!  I’m trying to think of ways to make it last.  I was so hungry for protein when I took it out of the oven that I ate a leg immediately.

Now I feel kinda gross because I also ate some pie.  😦  I guess I was feeling like it was my own personal holiday or something.  I’m going to try to go running later to make up for having been so reckless in the kitchen… or maybe not.  I’m feeling kinda lazy.

Tomorrow is CrossFit totals… YAY!

CrossFit 5K

So it was really hard for me to go in today… like really hard.  I sat on my bed for 30 minutes waiting to find the energy to get to the box, and it never happened.  I dressed in my gym clothes all the while telling myself that I would want to once I was ready.  Really I just was like… well, I’m already dressed… I guess I should. 
When I got there, I still wasn’t feelin’ it, but after the warm up, I was more in tune with my energy levels.  The run was lonely but eye-opening.  I can totally do a 5K.  Psh…

After the run I guess we were all longing for something CrossFit-like to do.  So we hung out at the box for another hour and a half like nerds and practiced kipping.  I look like a fish outta water when I attempt to kip.

There’s the 6pm class all laughing at my sad attempts at kipping.  It’s okay because I blew their minds with my mad pole dancing skillz!

Anyway, my time was something like 33 minutes on the 5K.  (I took off a minute and a half for having to wait at traffic lights!  Ugh…)

On a happier, more delicious note, I made twice baked sweet potatoes today using a very slightly modified version of Juli’s recipe from PaleOMG.com.

It was frickin’ delicious!!! I ate (gasp) THREE of them today. Two for lunch and one after CrossFit.

I WON! Kinda…

Well, I came in second yesterday.  I know, I know… it’s not a competition, but I can’t help it.  I’m a competitive person, and beating almost everyone makes me feel accomplished.

WOD:  

800 M

21/15/9:  Push Press then Wall Balls

800 M

I completed the work out in 17:33, which is admittedly still very slow, but I’m getting there.  The whole running thing is where I’m a total loser.  I had to sprint the last 800 M to beat Charlotte.  YEAH!!!  That’s right, I beat my #1 competitor!  (But I’m not too thrilled because she sounded a little sick to begin with, so she’s not at 100%… and I only beat her by like 30 seconds.)

Anyways, enough about the WOD.  I’m worried about my speed.  I have to be able to run 1.5 miles in 13 minutes by March.  Although I think this’ll totally be possible, it’ll be tough.  My goal is to be able to run 1.5 miles in 11.5 minutes and still feel relatively fresh after.

… And this brings me to the WOD today… a 5K.  I’ll let you know how I do with a few pics of the carnage after.  

Oh, and guess what I made yesterday…. the Beard Beanie 2.0!  My creation last year was much less cool, so I’m happy that this one looks more lumberjack.

Completed Helen yesterday.  My time was 14:05.  Slllllooooooowwwww.  And there’s really no excuse for that.  I used a 1 pood kb (Russian weight for approximately 36 lbs) and a green band for assist on the pull ups.  Charlotte still kicked my ass.  She’s faster than I am… and she’s in much better shape.  But still.

I’m thinking of quitting my second job (definitely will… just have to decide when) so that I can devote 2-3 hours a day to CrossFit.  The police academy will be no joke, so I need to be prepared for physical torture, basically.  I think 2 hours of CrossFit every single day is just about on par with torture… in a good way.

Also, we have CFTs this weekend.  (CrossFit Totals).  In case you aren’t familiar with CrossFit, this just means the sum of a person’s best 1 rep max of dead lift, press, and squat.  My goal is 409, which will put me right at intermediate level.  If I get higher than that, I’ll be very pleased.  I’m not even thinking about getting lower than intermediate.  Not gonna happen.

 

In case you were sniggering, my press was only 65 but for 15 reps, and I was able to do it without any problems.  I imagine that I’ll be maxing with 85 this weekend.

My goal is to be in the advanced category by March.

Check out this weight lifting standards chart I found from the Aasgaard Company.  It’ll give you an idea of where you stand.  Feel free to share where you stand and how long you’ve been training, too.  You know I’m interested because I’m nosy and competitive.

I’m laminating it and putting it in my new CrossFit journal.  😀  Yup… I’m really making one.  I’m going to print everything, then get the local office supply store to bind it together.  I’ll post pics of it tomorrow so you can see how awesome it is.  What I really want is a WOD book from sportsjournals.com, but alas, I have a monthly budget that is calculated to the dollar.

In other notes, Paleo is difficult when on a strict budget.  Mostly because I want to buy the coconut flour, almond flour, etc to make pancakes, cookies, bread, etc.  Pretty much all the things that I’m not supposed to eat anyways.  Other than that, it’s not too bad.  I got a whole duck from the store a few days ago (on deep discount because those bitches ain’t cheap), and I’m waiting (impatiently) for it to thaw so I can remake the honey seared breasts that I had in Paris, France in May.  I’ll make sure to document this attempt for your entertainment later.

Catchin up

Tonight I finished in second place out of I guess maybe 10 people.  I thought that was a pretty amazing accomplishment considering that I usually finish pretty darn close to last.  With a time of 8:48, I am proud.

Okay, so I did 100 singles instead of double unders, which technically means I didn’t finish first, but I’m still proud of myself because there were a lot of others doing singles.  It’s not a competition, but sometimes it’s nice to know that I’m improving. 

Anyways, here’s the WOD:

I used a 30lb kb for the mason twists, 65lb bar for the front squats and completed 100 singles at the end of each round for the 3 rounds. 
This WOD was surprisingly easy given the front squats (dislike).  I’m thinking my weight needs to go up a little.  :/

Anyways, I need a CrossFit journal, so I’ve decided to make one.  Also, I think I should write down what I’m eating so I can lose some weight.  I’m not worried about what it says on the scale, but I am eating a bunch of crap (holidays), so I need to make sure that I’m getting enough vitamins and minerals from good food before I stuff my face with pumpkin pie. 

Also, it makes me fat.  Like really fat.  *sigh*  Even with a crazy work out schedule, I can still gain a ton of weight from eating pie… because I can eat a whole pie in one sitting, probably.  (Okay, definitely…  I’ve done it before… more than once.)

Breakfast, brunch, and general laziness

I’ve officially adopted a Paleo diet, which inspired me to create this blog.  I figure if I’m typing away, I’m much less likely to sneak into the kitchen and shove an entire piece of pie in my mouth.  Smart, right!?  Anyways, so this morning was my 4th day on the Paleo challenge.  I tried to do it for 30 days previously, and I broke down and ate oatmeal one morning.  NOT THIS TIME I TELL YOU!  I’m determined.  I’m even ready to Paleo the crap outta Thanksgiving on Thursday.  Armed with PaleOMG.com (Juli is amazing), a new sense of determination, and the desire to not look like an overstuffed sausage in my winter clothes, I’m ready.

So I made eggs this morning for breakfast.  Sunny side up and had half a banana.  Kick my butt if you say bananas aren’t Paleo.  I don’t care.  I’ll eat them until I pass out from the insulin spiking goodness if I want.  The truth is that I don’t really want that many anyways.  That’s how I know they are okay.  If I don’t crave it, it’s probably not poison.  Mmmm… cereal.  POISON!  See? 

For lunch… salmon with onions, brocolli, and carrots.  It was satisfying and pretty tasty but nothing to drool over.  What I really wanna make is this:

Alas, I have not yet properly stocked my kitchen with the necessary Paleo flour alternatives.  For one, Whole Foods is kinda far and I’m more than kinda lazy and secondly, I’m broke and that sh*t ain’t cheap.  Nevertheless, I will be making/creating food soon enough for you all to check out.

And just so you don’t think I’m weird for having to blog instead of eat, let me give you an inside look into my shared pantry with my carb loving family.
